Top Wedding Cinematographers: Amit & Sunita Love Story with Motion Films

Each time Motion Films receives an assignment to cover an Indian wedding in Vancouver; we take it as a challenge and an opportunity to be part of delightful proceedings. The challenge lies in cinematography. If it were a simple video coverage it would not tax our minds so much but to create something unique and memorable that will capture the essence of a ritual and the spirit of two joyous souls uniting in marriage and present it in different way calls for a lot of extra effort.

For Motion Films of Vancouver, a wedding is an opportunity to apply cinematographic skills to achieve a unique effect. Anyone who has watched Hollywood films will admire the cinematographer’s skills in endowing the film with its unique light, texture, camera angles and the pace at which it proceeds. Cinematographers are known to employ colourists to achieve a specific effect and maintain that theme despite changing lighting and scenes. Motion Films approaches wedding video coverage with the same serious intent of purpose to create something new each time. For us, the wedding of Amit and Sunita presented a cinematographic challenge. The undefined script was to present it as a love video culminating in marriage the Indian way.

It could have been stage managed but with a simple story line we let the couple play around naturally while videographers captured fleeting emotions and the interplay of guests as well as the charming locales selected to serve as the backdrop to their pre-wedding shoot. The wedding day was well planned by the team at Motion Films to focus on moods and emotions and bring out the rich, vivid, saturated color of Indian weddings, the action, laughter and also the tears at the parting of the bride from her family mingled with hopes for the future. Lighting played a crucial role as did the use of appropriate camera angles with the use of lenses and gels for that dreamy yet vividly rich look.

Light is but one part of the emotion. What stirs the heart strings more is music that goes into the scene as any cinematographer will tell you. The team chose a soulful rendering to provide the audio backdrop to the event. When the family finally watched the edited and polished video, the scenes playing on the screen went straight to their heart. More importantly, it was the music that helped achieve the emotive push.  Inspired by Hindi film directors of the 1950s who were skilful into weaving songs into the story of the film and words into the songs that meshed with the story of the film, we tried this approach for Amit and Sunita. It worked. They were more than happy with their wedding video created by Motion Films, the top wedding cinematographers in Vancouver.

For us at Motion Films, shooting video at weddings is not just a job in the routine course of things. The day will never repeat and we aim to capture it for posterity with our own unique skill set honed by years of experience and insight.

Choosing the Best Wedding Videographer in Vancouver

When it comes to video coverage of weddings the term “best” can have many meanings. A videographer may consider he is the best simply because he has the best and most expensive equipments. He might charge more because he thinks he is the best.  Unfortunately equipments do not translate to capturing the various shades of fleeting emotions that go into a wedding.

Then there are videographers who act more like directors at a wedding, right from the moment the bride is dressing up to the end of the reception. They forget they are here to cover a wedding, not interfere and dictate each moment and movement of the bride and groom. Their presence can prove intrusive and distract from the charm of the proceedings.

The best Vancouver wedding videographer- Motion Films is neither of the above. Good equipments are a pre-requisite but, as in photography or any creative art, they are only tools. The ultimate tool is the mind and creative eye. He can hover on the sidelines and in the background and use telephoto or come close up with a wide angle lens to capture the fleeting moment that occurs naturally without posing. His mind sees and his equipment captures.

A professional Vancouver video expert will have not one but two or three video cameraman covering the main event and also side acts. For example, a bride may be dressing up and that is captured by the videographer discreetly while another one will capture the interactions between the bride and the bridesmaids—infinitely more interesting that views from various angles of only the bride.

Then there is the wedding. A camera focuses on the bride and groom while another one records audience, capturing some vital moments such as the look on the bride’s father’s or mother’s face or that on the faces of guests or antics of children. Post production these can be blended into a wonderful canvas of contrasting emotions and feelings. It is woven into a story because each wedding is a unique story of a unique couple coming together for life. And the story has feelings and emotions to be captured, not just that of the couple but also of everyone among the guests. A wedding video tells a story, like a film does. Shooting, in this case, is just as important as post.

The best Vancouver wedding videographer, as you will find, does not arrive on the day of the wedding, set up his camera and start shooting. Professional videographers take the time and trouble to know the couple, discuss the event with them and build up a storyline, giving them tips such as facing the camera during the event, prior to the wedding. He takes time to visit the church, the reception site and consider the best angles and natural lighting available as also the need for additional lights. Preparation makes a difference and allows a smooth flow that shows in the results.

Come the big day and everyone enjoys it without even knowing the wedding videographer is going about his business because he is so unobtrusive but the camera does reach where it is intended to, without interfering or distracting. It is an art that comes only from experience.
